The word Macrocarpa is a latin word that originates from the term Quercus Macrocarpa which designates the large acorn oak tree (Bur oak). This species is indigenous to Canada and thrives along the Ottawa River.

Habitat
It is the most widespread of the native oaks. We find it from the Great Lakes to the St Lawrence area, in the central part of the Acadian forest and in the northwest, in the transitional zone between the Prairies and the boreal forest region. It prefers the fertile low lying areas where it grows usually in a mixed forest. Occasionally, one can see it in elevated areas.

Fruit
The acorn is ¾ to 1¼ inch (2 to 3 cm) in length, half of which at least is fitted inside a cup covered with large verrucose scales. The scales that border the cup terminate in a well delineated fringe.

Uses
Its wood is used in cabinet making, house finishing, flooring, naval construction and barrel making.
